Sri Lanka batted first and were in trouble early. A runout in both the first and second overs left them at 2 after 2, and it looked like the first pair were going to come out with a very low score. However, they took 8 runs from each of the remaining 2 overs of the partnership, coming off the court with 18 runs. They had successfully negotiated 3 third-ball situations.

The second pair faced 6 third-ball situations, losing a wicket (bowled) on just one of them. A catch in their first over, and another in their last kept them down to a partnership of 9, despite taking 10 runs off their second over. Sri Lanka's score stood at 27 after 8 overs.

The Sri Lankan's third pair suffered 2 catches in their 1st over, one catch in their 2nd, and a stumping in their 3rd. After 3 overs their partnership stood at -16 . . . but worse was yet to come. The 8th over involved 2 runouts (one from a third-ball situation) and a catch, and no scoring shots from the batters. Minus 15 from the over, and a partnership of -31.

The final pair suffered a hit-wicket dismissal in the 13th over, and Sri Lanka's score was -2. 10 runs from the next over and a single from the following saw the score up to 9. 2 runouts in the last over, and the Sri Lankans posted a final score of 3.

New Zealand's opening pair would have been short-priced favourites to win the first skin. But the Sri Lankan Women, like the Sri Lankan Men, are not intimidated by any team, and never seem to give up. They plugged away at the New Zealanders, effecting a runout in the first and third overs. Going into the fourth, New Zealand were 13. Picking up just singles, New Zealand crept to 17 with 2 balls to go. A runout on the next ball, and scoring restricted to a 2 on the last, saw Sri Lanka win the skin, keeping the New Zealand openers to a partnership of 14.

From that point on, the New Zealanders began to improve . . . until the 8th over, when Vanessa had Natasha Williams bowled from successive balls. Despite this, and 2 catches earlier in the partnership, the New Zealanders managed a partnership of 23.

The next pair started badly, with a wicket on their second ball (bowled). They didn't lose another wicket, posting an impressive 37 runs.

The last pair also lost a wicket early (runout on the third ball of the 13th over). They too didn't lose another wicket, and with the help of 2 sevens from Helen Watson and a 5 from Maia Lewis, the New Zealand Vice Captain and Captain posted a remarkable 65 run partnership, for a team total of 139.
